Turkey Hollow Consort
(Outer Green)
These cats can pick. A trio from Central Maine, Turkey Hollow Consort straddles styles as we traverse the 13
songs on this disc: there's the effervescent jangle of bluegrass, the vacant twang of old-time country, the searching
purposefulness of folk music, even a little Delta blues. The composite is a pithy arrangement that is well-played and
seemingly heartfelt.
Skimming the lighter side of ambitious acoustic music, Turkey Hollow's
members---Dave Rowe, his son Tom, and Denny Breau (some Acadians ended up in Maine, after all)---have chops to spare
here; Denny and Dave are particular wonders, trading off on acoustic guitar and banjo, and separately adding
mandolin, tin whistle, piano and electric guitar to the mix.
The group writes most of the songs, adding tunes from Bob Dylan ("Don't
Think Twice It's Alright") and Townes van Zandt ("White Freightliner Blues') and handle the harmonies with
aplomb.
The reason a record by a little-known (in these parts) Maine folk band came
to us is Turkey Hollow Consort will perform at The Art House in Lafayette of Sept. 29 with Hubtown's own Fair to
Middlin' for "Maine to LA: An Evening of Folk Music."
Since they're coming all this way, we'll forgive our north woods cousin
Breau for calling our favorite seasonal food "crawdads." |
